Divot Care

As the days get shorter and the temperatures start to drop, these are the signs that fall is coming.  Fall is a great time for golf, especially the fall colors and the golf conditions.  One way to help ensure we keep great golf conditions and course care, is proper divot filling/replacement.  Proper divot care is important, especially in the fall with slower turf growth and seed germination; this will pay dividends in the coming fall and set us up for a great spring.

This week, I would like to highlight proper divot care, with guidelines on when to replace or fill with the divot seed mix.  “Should I replace the divot, fill it with divot mix or replace the divot and then put the divot mix?”  Below are the guidelines on how to replace divots at Green Bay Country Club; not to mention, these are the same guidelines set by the USGA. When golfers take the time to replace a divot properly or repair divot areas, it helps keep the fairways and tees in good condition for their fellow golfers.

Replace divot if it has some soil attached and has not been shattered.

This is an example of when to replace the divot.  Notice how the divot is in one piece and has soil attached to the bottom.

After replacing the divot, be sure to step on it to establish contact with the soil below.

If the divot cannot be replaced, then the divot mix should be used in the scarred area.

Please keep the seed mix in the fairway and tees only.  Also, if you walk-by a dead(brown) or shattered divot, please toss it into the rough and it will be mulched up by the rough mower.

Together we can keep GBCC looking and playing great with proper divot care, all cooperation is appreciated.
