March 31st State of the Course

By Golf Course Superintendent Ben Larsen

Currently we are approximately 90% clear of snow on the course; however, with the amount of ice, snow, and frost in the ground, we are unable to predict an opening date.  After inspecting what has been exposed, I’m happy to report that there is no evidence of significant winter kill or flood damage.  Also, after March 14th-15th’s flood, the only areas affected were the holes that Bower Creek flows through (#13, #12, #10, #18, #1, #9 & #8).  Luckily, no greens or tees were touched by the flood waters; however, some fairway, rough and fescue areas have some debris and silt, that was left behind after the flood waters receded.  The past couple of weeks, the Grounds Crew have been cleaning debris and removing silt from all affected fairways and roughs.  By immediately removing and cleaning the silt and debris, we are reducing the risk for significant turf loss due to suffocation.

Fescue areas on #12 (seen below) and #8 still have a significant amount of silt that needs to be removed. Currently, the silt is too wet to properly remove from the fescue areas. The plan is to wait until the silt dries more, so we can effectively remove it.
