History

The idea for our Club began in 1989 and spread rapidly around town. With love for the game leading the way, GBCC’s founding members put forth an effort to arrange the finances, grow a list of prospective members, and most importantly, find a location special enough to make their dreams become a reality. Today, we are a fully private club with members from widely varying backgrounds, including athletics, finance, medicine, law, construction, politics, and industry. The Club continually evolves and improves to meet the demands of changing lifestyles.

  • PREP FOR CLUB

    • Green Bay Country Club began with a simple desire to feed the appetite for quality golf in a community that could support it. The idea for our Club began in 1989 and spread rapidly around town; key leaders in their industries stepped forward to offer their expertise, and buy-in from the community ensued.

      With a love for the game leading the way, GBCC’s founding members put forth an effort to arrange the finances, grow a list of prospective members, and most importantly, find a location special enough to make their dreams become a reality.

      The pursuit eventually led to 240 acres of farmland on Green Bay’s southeast side in the village of Bellevue. Manned through generations by the Kroll family, the land had become difficult to farm as the result of urban sprawl and an interstate highway that cut through the property. But, as fate would have it, it was a wonderfully diverse tract for great golf.

  • CONSTRUCTION OF CLUB

    • Construction of the 18-hole layout and practice area began in the early 1990’s. The club’s Board of Directors called on the architectural firm of Dick Nugent and Associates to design the course. The character of the course is defined by the topography that previously existed. While a large ridge running through the property was graded to accommodate downhill holes, wooded portions, ravines, hilly terrain, and meandering Bower Creek left a canvas for Nugent and Associates to create dramatic holes. Uneven fairway on several holes combines with true rolling greens to offer a fair, but challenging experience for golfers of all levels. The main clubhouse would offer a majestic view sitting atop a hillside where the Kroll family home once stood. The 1930 two-story brick house was even preserved, transported from the property during construction to a new location in the village of Bellevue.

  • LAUNCH OF CLUB

    • On May 5th, 1995, the Club opened to great fanfare. By November that year it was already garnering national recognition when Golf Digest named it one of America’s Best New Private Courses. At the time it was being compared to the original 18-holes at Pete Dye’s Blackwolf Run, which opened in 1988 just an hour down Interstate 43 in the village of Kohler. Since then, it has been ranked among the Top 10 courses in Wisconsin.

  • GREAT LAKES CLASSIC

    • The Women’s Senior Golf Tour got its start at Green Bay Country Club, too. An annual event hosted from 2000-2002 drew rave reviews from some of the legendary players of the LPGA. Jane Blalock, a pioneer for the WSGT, said of GBCC: “I think it’s a U.S. Open-caliber golf course.”

  • SPORTS CENTER CONSTRUCTION

    • In 2005, recognizing that the best part of country club membership is the time spent with family, the Club expanded and built a Sports Center facility. The Sports Center includes a zero-entry pool and two-story waterslide, a six-hole par three executive course, six tennis courts, and a golf practice area. The Sports Center has set the scene for countless family memories, and we’re humbled that our members choose GBCC as the place they choose to raise their family.
